Marvel's 'The Avengers' is an excellent film. It's probably the best comic book movie I've ever seen. This movie is more science-fiction focused than previous entries in the Marvel film series; even though the other films have delved into the genre this one ups the ante.

Most of the main characters have had their own standalone feature, so their powers and characterisations are already set therefore the film can focus on the dynamic between the characters, the story line, and the incredible action sequences which are (quite frankly) awesome.

The protagonists are all likeable and perform awe inspiring feats during the exciting action scenes; the antagonists are also good, with Loki continuing his pursuit for self-validation through destruction while his heroic adoptive brother Thor tries to save or stop him. Loki's army is made up of generic yet still dark and menacing extraterrestrials; while an unknown malevolence (Thanos) which granted him power still lurks in the shadows waiting for the inevitable sequels of the franchise.

A CGI driven film which has a good plot; a welcome change from the usual sci-fi slosh tossed together. There is quite a lot of genuinely hilarious comedy in the film which is perfectly executed without disrupting the flow of events.

To properly understand all of the plot threads and the characters, one should view the earlier movies ‘Iron Man’ 1 and 2, ‘Thor’, ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’, and (the movie which isn’t essential to watch) ‘The Incredible Hulk’ (2008). The film is appropriate for all audiences although some might get confused by the scientific jargon used at certain points by Tony Stark and Dr. Bruce Banner.
